2. Surveys aimed at the study of the impact of fisheries on the marine ecosystem
2.1. 2005 TREBOl survey
The research survey TREBOL (study of the impact of the rock-hopper, “TREn de BOLos”, in Spanish) meets the compromise reached by the SGPM and the Principality of Asturias´s government to know the implications of this fishing modality on the bottom ecosystem and its resources, as demanded by the fisheries sector. It was carried out on board of the oceanographic vessel Vizconde de Eza, which belongs to the SGPM (General Marine Fisheries Secretariat) between the 25th of April and the 6th of May, 2005. The main objectives proposed during the TREBOL 2005 survey were:
- Geomorphological and physiographic study of the hard bottoms of the Asturian shelf
- Description of the main communities (epifauna and demersal species)
- Identification of the target species and the discards of this trawling modality
- Survival of the discarded species
- Direct effects on fish trophic chains
- Estimation of the short term direct impact over the ecosystem and its resources
Main gear used:
- Simrad EM-300 multibeam echosounder
- Simrad GN-30 GPSD of the oceanographic vessel
- EA 500 monobeam echosounder
- SV Plus water sound speed sensor
- 2 rock-hoppers 42/49 to cause the impact
